What are Beta Monkey REX2 drum loops? The REX loop format is a proprietary format from Propellerhead. Essentially, a REX file is a compressed audio file which has been sliced into individual audio regions. These sliced regions allow your host DAW software to manipulate the timing and pitch of the REX file. They are ideally suited for any type of percussion or drum tracks. And, in case you were wondering, nearly all of Beta Monkey’s drum loops offer REX2 format included with purchase.

Why are REX files ideal for drum loops and other percussion loops? Drum loops are easily sliced because of the easily detected transients present in most drum loops. These slices are then handled by a compatible host DAW to give users control over sequence and timing of the audio.

What do I need to make or edit REX2 drum loops?

If you purchase any Beta Monkey REX2 loops, then nothing! We’ve done all the difficult, pain-staking work of converting our loops into the REX2 format for you. Believe us, it’s tedious work and not one of the tasks anyone enjoys around here!

Nearly all of the drum loop download packs in our shop offer a REX2 option included with purchase. We have you covered, whether you need rock drum loops, metal drum loops, jazz drum loops, or funk drum loops!

But, if you happen to have a bunch of WAV or AIFF format loops in your sample collection, then you can convert them as well. We highly suggest you get your hands on the only software capable of creating or editing the REX and REX2 file formats: Recycle.

Recycle is MAC and PC compatible, supporting 24-bit stereo as well as other audio formats. It’s primary function is to create and edit REX files. It also allows userscreative control to shape and manipulate audio loops in a number of other ways.

If you are using REX format loops in your music, we highly suggest you purchase Propellerhead’s ReCycle program (currently it is up to version 2.1). You’ll find it fairly intuitive and easy to use. And, what’s more, you will find it essential to controlling and harnessing the power of your REX2 loops in whatever software platform you are using.

Of course. Beta Monkey Music offers nearly all of our drum loop collections in the REX file format. We’ve done all the conversion processing for you (it is a tedious and rigorous process when you’re working with thousands of audio files!).

So, save yourself time and money as all loop formats are included with your Beta Monkey purchase. If you are one of those musicians who switch between different recording setups and platforms, then having all loop formats will prove invaluable. That’s why we include all three popular loop formats in (nearly) all of our drum loop libraries at no extra charge!

We hope we have addressed the usual questions and concerns about the REX and REX2 format for loops. So, dig in and enjoy!

What is a Rex2 Loop?

A Rex2 file is a particular form of audio file for both Windows and Mac OS.

Rex2 files were made popular by DAW applications like Propellerheads ‘Reason’ and the Stylus RMX plugin from Spectrasonics because of their amazing beat stretching abilities for loops. This is achieved by the Rex2 file loop assigning specific ‘hit points’ on the peaks of the waveform.

Rex

When played back in a DAW like Reason or Cubase, the hit points lock on to a time grid which allows the loop to be played at a different tempo to the original. This technology has been emulated by other audio file formats such as Apple Loops in Garageband.

How are Rex2 Files Made?

All of our Rex2 files are created in a program called Recycle. We manually specify where the transient hit points sit in the beat. This takes many hours of work to get right. When played back in your DAW, these hit points allow you to quantize or even re-sequence the groove at whichever tempo you like.

When to Use Rex2 Files

Rex2 files are really ideal for percussive samples that have extreme transients such as drum loops or percussion. We don’t recommend Rex2 loops for sounds that contain soft attack notes like synth pads or orchestral strings that swell and have a soft attack. For loops that have a soft attack you’ll get better results by using WAV files and if you need to adjust the tempo or key it’s best to use a good time stretching algorithm instead of hit points.

Ableton Live has some really powerful time stretching tools.
